Tom's Prone Tractor uses hand controls, allowing him to brake and accelerate while lying prone on the back of his tractor. With his Prone Tractor, Tom is able to mow his lawn, plow his driveway, and travel short distances so that he can go to the store or take his dog for walks.
I am helping our military men and women who have gotten blown up by IEDs or any injury that disables them. Anyone can use these ideas; please pass them on to any ability magazines, mobility magazines, or disability websites—any and all are welcome. I'm a gearhead and a shade-tree mechanic, and when I see a problem, my brain starts spinning. I have a welder, bandsaw, grinder, sander, drill press, lots and lots of hardware and tools, and then just stuff, lots more stuff. Gearheads are everywhere. Also, gearheads are warm and fuzzies. If anyone is disabled and needs to adapt something, ask a gearhead. They are the people with garages that are overflowing with tools, and they will help you.
I was fortunate to have John, Gail, and Wendy who used my garage and my tools to create my two Prone Tractors. Not just friends... ANGELS!
If you need a prone tractor, look for a Cub Cadet 1864 or a John Deere 318 or another tractor with hand controls. I would advise these because they have hand controls, and the rear plate is straight and flat and is easy to bolt on to. You can also look at a Cub Cadet 1863, although that model does not have power steering. If you have pain in the upper body, you may not want that one. A gearhead can scale the picture and make the platform out of perforated angle iron, plywood, and a couple of sofa cushions.

Make sure you make a guard for your feet so you don't get them crushed (like I did) if you back into a tree. Then have it fueled up, check the oil, and start mowing your lawn. With the pain I was in, I'd make 2 passes and go inside and lay down on ice packs. Take it slow; don't overdo yourself. It took me 6 days to do an average-size yard with a 48" deck. To say I was going slow was an understatement. You can also trim the hedges if you like; I suggest the Black & Decker 12-volt hedge trimmer. Some pipe and pipe clamps, and viola!
